Surfing at Waikiki

When we visit Oahu, our favorite place to surf is Waikiki.  Dad does awesome.  He goes out for a couple of hours and then takes the kids out to surf.  E & M have it in their genes, they were born to surf.  They make it look so easy!
After some coaxing, I decided to give it a try.

As a kid growing up in San Diego, I spent every summer day at the beach.  My Mom would surf for awhile and then boogie board with us.  I stuck to boogie boarding & body surfing after not doing so well in beginning surf lessons.  I just figured it wasn't for me.  Well, here I am 30 yrs later giving it a try. The first picture shows what I looked like the first half hour....yup....I'm in the water. (not standing on the surfboard..LOL)  Then, I finally began to figure it out.  At last, I was able to ride a few long waves to the shore!  Wa-hoo!! It helps that I had great teachers...my Mom, husband, & kids.

In addition to our daily surfing at Waikiki, we ate our daily dose of Hawaiian shave ice at Waiola's. (this little shave ice place has been featured on Hawaii Five-O)  We also had a chance to hang out with some cousins.

More pictures from the beach, shave ice, and the free trolley ride around Waikiki.  The kids also loved Grandma's fearless attitude towards catching crabs.  They would sit and wait for a crab to peek out of its hiding place and then try to grab it.  Grandma wouldn't wait. She would just grab the crab.  Wow!  Then, she would pull off its pinchers.  At the start, M wasn't so sure she wanted to hold the crab, but once the pinchers were gone, it wasn't so bad.  :)
