E collected more than 1,900 books to donate to Spread the Word Nevada for his Eagle Project. This was our post on the first half of his Eagle Project. The second half of his project was planning and organizing a "Cleaning Day."
He had lots of scouts help with the transportation and set-up. They are such hard workers. They were done in an hour. The girls were on the decoration committee.
Before the cleaning, a slide show presentation about "Spread The Word Nevada" was shown along with the video clip from Channel 8 News. E talked about his love for reading and how excited he was for other children to go on the same adventures he had while reading. After brief instructions, everyone got busy cleaning. With over 4 dozen volunteers the books were clean within 40 minutes!! Yay!!
To keep things fun as we cleaned, E set up an "I Spy Game". Every time we collectively cleaned 200 books, the MC would call out an item or name to look for on the books. "I spy a book with an animal on it" Winners received a lollipop. He also had someone tracking our progress on a thermometer.
At the end, after everyone refueled with refreshments, they helped carry the books out to the truck our neighbor generously drove to our church to pick up the boxes. The next day, our neighbor drove E and some scouts to drop off the books at Spread the Word Nevada.
Ms. Debbie, the book drive coordinator for Spread the Word Nevada, said E's project was the most impressive Eagle Project thus far. Not only were all of his boxes sorted by reading level (board books, early readers, chapter books, etc) and had the quantity noted on the box, he had surpassed the suggested goal of 1,500! It was a win-win all around.
